2006 is the sixth year of Murray Darling Rescue. So far we have planted
over 850,000 trees with 4800 planters.
Our trees are part of a long term solution, treating the cause, not just
the symptom. Our trees provide much needed habitat, help to stabilise
erosion, and contribute to reducing the impacts of climate change by soaking
up CO2 from the atmosphere.
This
year we have changed our name, as
the Rescue is concerned not only with the Murray River, but with important tributaries
such as the Murrumbidgee and Darling
Rivers.
Murray
Darling Rescue is a joint project between Scouts Australia Greenfleet
Australia and it is
your project bringing
life back to the Murray.

Badly effected land - Lake Hume 2003
Wangaratta - June 2002
The
project has the support of relevant local Councils, Landcare groups, local farmers,
and is in alignment with the overall catchment strategies.
As a part of
the Greenfleet Australia's policy
all of trees planted will create native 'Forests'
where indigenous species will remain
in the ground permanently.
This
re-establishment of native vegetation is targeted at overcoming the huge Salinity
Problem. When trees are removed, more water is allowed to reach the water
table and rise through salty rock layers. The water then seeps into water courses
making them saltier than normal or salt concentrates in soil after the water evaporates
or is taken up by plants.

Did you know?
- 500 rural communities are under threat by rising salt levels.
- Salt threatens 21,000 kms of roads and 1,000 kms of railway line. 0
- Adelaide's water will be unfit to drink
- Many fish, bird, frog and lizard species are under threat of extinction from rising
salt levels.
- Salinity in the lower Murray will increase by approximately 50% in the next 50 years
- Water from the Murray will soon be too salty to irrigate crops.

Greenfleet Australia
Greenfleet
Australia is a non-profit
organisation that specializes in transport and the environment.
The trees
planted for Murray Darling Rescue have been funded by Australian motorists and
fleets, through their subscriptions to Greenfleet.
Greenfleet
has a simple program that aims to reduce the impact of transport on the environment.
Transport is Australia's fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions, the
primary cause of climate change and global warming. For $40 per year (tax deductible),
17 native trees are planted on the motorist's behalf. These trees, as they grow,
will absorb the greenhouse emissons that the average vehicle produces in one year
(based on 4.3 tonnes of CO2). In 2004, Greenfleet has planted over 1.5 million
native trees on behalf of subscribers. See www.greenfleet.com.au.
Greenfleet
is a member of the Federal Government's Greenhouse Challenge program. Greenfleet's
work is underpinned by the most rigorous science developed by bodies such as CSIRO
Atmospheric Research, the Bureau of Transport Economics, the Centre for Forest
Technology, the Australian Greenhouse Office and the Victorian Sustainable Energy
Authority.
These tress assist in:
- Cleansing the air we breathe
- Creating habitat
- Combating erosion
- Reducing salinity
